English levels (A1-C2): how long does it take to move up?

The CEFR defines 6 levels: A1, A2 (basic), B1, B2 (intermediate), C1, C2 (advanced). As a benchmark, it is often estimated at around 200 hours of guided learning to move up one level, though it depends on your starting point, consistency and immersion. In Bournemouth, immersion speeds that pace up a lot.

Indicative guide for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking students (18+) planning their English course.

The 6 CEFR levels, one line each

A1: introduce yourself, basic phrases. A2: simple everyday situations. B1: cope with travel and familiar topics. B2: reasonable fluency and understanding complex texts (the level many universities require). C1: flexible, effective use for academic and professional purposes. C2: near-native mastery.

How many hours per level?

A widely cited benchmark estimates around 200 hours of guided learning to move from one level to the next (more at higher levels). It is not an exact law: your real pace depends on your prior base, how much you practise outside class and whether you live in immersion.

Why immersion changes the maths

Studying in Bournemouth is not just attending class: you practise English in your accommodation, the street, shopping and social life. That constant exposure multiplies your "real hours" versus studying at home. That is why a month of immersion usually pays off far more than a month at a local academy.

How to know your level before booking

Before choosing intensity and duration, it helps to measure your current level (A1-C2). That way you avoid overpaying or falling short. At APEX-UK we guide you in your language to set the starting point and a realistic goal (e.g. "from B1 to B2 for an exam").

Which course fits your goal

If you want fast progress, an Intensive course (more weekly hours) speeds things up. If you are preparing an exam (IELTS, Cambridge), it is best to reach the level first and then do specific preparation. We help you combine duration, intensity and dates for your goal and budget.
